1 9 5 9 - Maysa, Sylvio Caldas, Teddy Randazzo...

30 April 1959 - American rock'n'roll sensation Teddy Randazzo premieres on 1st of May 1959 at Jardim de Inverno Fasano where he stays for the whole week.
29 April 1959 - Mary Wynne says Maysa would start a stint at Boite Oasis tonight while Sylvio Caldas with American singer Wanda Curtis had premiered last night at Michel. Actually, Ms Curtis was barred from singing by the Musicians's Union due to a invalid work permit. Mary actually says: 'Assistindo aos ensaios durante o cocktail de ante-ontem (27 April), Sylvio Caldas com o violão cantando uma porção das músicas queridas e guardando as novidades para o show e Wanda Curtis expressivamente demonstrando seus 'hits' norte-americanos, me parece que o movimento do 'betting' durante a temporada deve ser bem grande'.
30 April 1959 - just having a look at Mary Wynne's column at Estadão one may gather what 1959 was like: singer-musician Nat King Cole having just visited São Paulo left the impression his was the biggest tour ever performed by any foreign (or national) act. This turned out to be not an 'impression' but real truth. Not even rock band Queen (in 1981) broke this record. Nat Cole was really KING. 

Another look at Ms Wynne's column and one sees that rua Barão de Itapetininga was where fashion sat... Mme. Rosita (Rosa de Libman, born on 10 May 1904 in Montevideo, Uruguay) had her atelier on rua Barão: Vocês notaram todo o movimento da rua Barão de Itapetininga, aquele elegante toldo cor-de-laranja (cor da moda), ante-ontem e ontem à tarde? Mme. Rosita apresentou a sua coleção dos ultra-novos modelos franceses e finíssimas peles a um seleto grupo de senhoras da sociedade. Espetacular sucesso.

5 May 1959 - Mary Wynne shows a photo taken at Maysa's parents' house with Wanda Curtis & Ginger Ryan, two American singers who were trying their luck at nightclubs in São Paulo. The lovely girls weren't very successful though for Ms Curtis who was supposed to have premiered at Michel's in the same bill as 'old timer' Sylvio Caldas, was barred from it by an injunction from Ordem dos Musicos, Brazilian's Musician Union. 
6 May 1959 - at Michel's the biggest 'come back' of 1959: Sylvio Caldas (born on 23 May 1908) who had been a major Brazilian star since 1931 competing with the other 2 popular singers Francisco Alves and Orlando Silva... was still as good as gold. Mary Wynne says Sylvio's recitals at Michel's were eagerly awaited by many with the house packed to the rafters. Everyone knew Sylvio could quit the whole thing at a drop of a hat... and that's what happened a few days after this note was printed at Estadão. Mr Caldas couldn't wait to celebrate his 51st birthday on the 23rd. He took off and probably went fishing which was his favourite sport; while this was going on at Michel, Maysa, who had been a 'disciple' of Sylvio's herself was doing well at Boite Oasis
13 May 1959 - As we have anticipated, Sylvio Caldas 'fell ill' and had to stop his stint at Michel's... Caldas worked less than a week... American Wanda Curtis could not get her 'working permit' so Jimmy Christie, Michel's owner had to make do with Maria Ribeiro a young hopeful who struck lucky... We don't know whatever happened to Ms Curtis... she's probably gone back to the States; Mary Wynne tells us she had a long phone conversation with Mr. Figueiredo Rocha who is Mary Gonçalves' father. The old man, who knows about show business told about his daughter's activities in Chile and Argentina where Mary sang at various theatres & night clubs. Mary Gonçalves who was not a novice when it came to living abroad - would probably extend her trip to Venezuela & Mexico. 
20 May 1959 - Mary Wynne's style of writing Portuguese was really quaint for she sprinkled English words everywhere. Look at this particular note about young singer Agnaldo Rayol: 'Atenção brotos! 'Calling all bobby-soxer'! Estreou ontem no Blue Room da Sears o simpático jovem cantor Agnaldo Rayol, cantanto especialmente para vocês em 'show' durante o 'five o'clock tea'. Naturalmente, seus pais também são 'welcome'; Mary Wynne says Freddy Feld spent the week-end in Rio de Janeiro and told her Cab Calloway (born on 25 December 1907) was still the same at 52 years old as he was at 32 when he was on top. Ms Wynne gets all nostalgic remembering her young years at college when she'd hear a lot of Mr Calloway's 'hey-de-ho'... The Cotton Club Revue has a cast of 30 dancers and singers presenting a complete vaudeville show. 

21 May 1959 - here's the Cotton Club Revue of 1959 which received rave-reviews from Mary Wynne and everyone else led by the great Cabell (Cab) Calloway - jazz singer & band-leader.

21 May 1959 - Teatro Bela Vista had a more conservative repertoire: Eugene O'Neill's 'Before breakfast', translated by Madalena Nicol as 'Antes do café'; Luigi Pirandello's 'L'uomo dal fiore in bocca' translated by Adacto Filho as 'O homem da flor na boca' and Tennessee Willams' 'Hello from Bertha' translated by Guilherme de Almeida as 'Lembranças de Berta' with Nydica Licia, Sergio Cardoso, Wanda Kosmos, Rita Cléos, Suzy & Alceu. 
21 May 1959 - playwright Gianfrancesco Guarnieri's 'Gimba' in which Maria Della Costa plays a dark woman who lives in the slums directed by Flavio Rangel.
10 October 1959 - The day TV Record started its first rock show 'Programa da Juventude' (Youths's Hour) with rock sensational teenage singer Celly Campello as an anchor & Randal Juliano as an MC. It was beamed live - as there was no video-tape in 1959 - straight from Teatro Record on Rua da Consolação, 1992. 
10 October 1959 - at Black Jack Boite a rock'n'roll act straight from Japan called Takashi Ikeda who lived and worked in Brazil a couple of years. Ikeda played the guitar Elvis Presley style and sang 'Hound dog' and 'Tutti Frutti' as part of his war horse; at the Captain's Bar on Avenida Duque de Caxias, 525, one could hear Claudia Barroso's singing and Paulinho Nogueira's playing; at CHICOTE, pianist Robledo did his routine & Zezé Gonzaga sang beautifully.
10 October 1959 - columnist Mary Wynne tells all about pianist Robledo's premiere at Chicote... with Odilon singing for free... and even Caco Velho dueting 'Rag Mop' maybe to remember his time living in the USA.  
11 October 1959 - Ruth de Souza & Nidia Licia in 'Oração para uma negra' (A prayer for a Black woman) at Teatro Bela Vista.
28 November 1959 - US act Billy Eckstine appears at Teatro Record nightly from 1st to 6 December.
5 December 1959 - the opening act for Billy Eckstine was a millionaire revue 'Você falou, tá falado' (You've always got the last word) with top show girl Mara Rubia and Consuelo Leandro who could be a show girl and a comedienne to boot.
6 December 1959 - Mary-go-round's Carrossel shows a photo with a smiling Billy Eckstine and Michel's owner Jimmy Christie. Eckstein was accompanied by the Fred Feld Trio
6 December 1959 - see at Black Jack Boite a real Japanese young man called Takashi Ikeda who played guitar and sang many rock'n'roll tunes he copied from Elvis Presley like 'Hound dog' or Little Richard's 'Tutti Frutti'. I wish I knew how Ikeda arrived in Brazil and how he got himself a working permit to perform at Brazilian night clubs. Brazilian youths were usually too shy to try and sing in English at the end of the 1950s. The Japanese boy had no such qualms...

1 9 6 2 - Jewish theatre T.A.I.B. - Saloon at rua Augusta

6 June 1962 - Revista do Radio n. 664 shows a full-page ad with Leonardo Vilar & Cleyde Yaconis in their programme on Channel 9, TV Excelsior on Thursdays at 8:30 PM.
'Melodias', says 'Zé do Burro (main character in 'O pagador de promessas') switched the scissors for the stage. He had been trained as a tailor when he was young but when a young man chose the stage as his real calling. 
18 November 1962 - Teatro Record & Otelo Zeloni present the 1956 Italian musical-comedy 'Boa noite, Betina' (Buona notte, Bettina) written by Sandro Giovannini, Pietro Garinei & Gorni Kramer which made Walter Chiari & Delia Scala famous. Brazilian show-girl Anilza Leoni plays Bettina and Otelo Zeloni the part played by Chiari in Italy. 
18 November 1962 - Jewish theatre TAIB - Teatro de Arte Israelita Brasileiro at Rua Três Rios, 252 was designed by Mange, Martins & Engels and opened for the public in 1953. Reflecting Brazilian-Jewish cultural decadence it closed its doors in the 1980s and have been abandoned since then.

18 November 1962 - at Teatro Natal singer-actress Laura Suarez stars in 'Henrique Pongetti's 'Society em baby doll'. Laura was born on 23 November 1909, the same year Carmen Miranda was born in Portugal. Laura as Ms Miranda also worked in the USA for some time. In 1962 Ms Suarez was 53 years old but still played vigorous women on the stage. 
Laura Suarez was crowned Miss Ipanema 1929.
18 November 1962 - Mary Wynne mentions singer Martha Janette and pianist Fred Feld who's been playing at Djalma at Praça Roosevelt, owned by keyboard-player Djalma Ferreira.  
18 November 1962 - a brand-new night-club would open  on 30 November 1962; owned by impresario Paulo Cotrim - who already had Juão Sebastião Bar; Saloon at Rua Augusta, 2203, would soon be the talk of town as far as the 'younger set' was concerned. 
30 November 1962 - Mary Wynne dedicates her whole column at Estadão for the opening night of Saloon - the newest night club in Sao Paulo. 
30 November 1962Juão Sebastião Bar at rua Major Sertório, 772 would close on Friday night because everyone went to the opening of Saloon its 'baby-brother' basement night-club on rua Augusta, 2203. This sort of place was usually called 'inferninho' (little hell) by the 'younger set'. The ad says: 'um subsolo anti-atômico para sua guerra fria' (a fall-out shelter for your Cold War)...
2 December 1962 - at Teatro  Municipal Josehey Leão & Mozart Xavier - the 2 senior dancers show their skill with Yara Rossi & Maria Leite...all under the guidance of Maria Olenewa
11 December 1962 - inauguration of 'new' Teatro Santana on 13 December 1962; actually the real Teatro Santana, on rua 24 de Maio was demolished in 1958; it had been a major theatre since the turn of the century. This 'new' Teatro Santana was built on rua Amador Bueno, 209, a side-street from Avenida Ipiranga having Cine Marco Polo on the corner... this 'new' Santana was strictly 'teatro de rebolado' or 'burlesque'... only musical comedies with lots of show girls and off-colour jokes uttered by second-class comedians. The 'new' Santana was in the same line of business as Teatro Natal (red room & blue room) which was a 'resurrected' Odeon, on rua da Consolação, demolished even earlier than Santana. You see, there was a tendency to become cheaper with the passing of time. Every demolished theatre would be replaced by a cheaper version somewhere else - usually a seedier location.

1 9 6 3 - Bossa Nova, Kirk Douglas, Maurice Chevalier, Ray Charles

13 January 1963 -  Mugui – Japanese night-club on Rua Augusta – show at 0:30 AM and 4:30 AM. Shan Du Show with Nancy Mary & Noburo Taki with  Ichiro Nakagawa & His Combo Brasa Nova; Tonia Carrero was in 'Tiro e queda' at TBC; comedienne Dercy Gonçalves was 'Senhora Presidenta' 50 years before Dilma Rousseff became the 1st Brazilian Presidenta (female president).
18 January 1963 - Bossa Nova was getting bigger with more & more shows attended by university students. Teatro Record had a special Bossa Monday night with some of the best acts around. This trend would go on a crescendo which culminated in 1964-1965; Tonia Carrero was at TBC.
20 January 1963 - Teatro Record emulates Carnegie Hall's 21 November 1962 Bossa Nova splash and presents its own Bossa Nova Monday night show with Marisa, Lucio Alves, Tamba Trio, Os Cariocas, Claudette Soares, Doris Monteiro, Roberto Menescal & His Combo plus Sexto Bossa Rio.
20 January 1963 - from Tuesday through Sunday Teatro Record presents 'Boa noite, Betina' a musical comedy with Otelo Zeloni, Anilza Leoni, Raquel Martins, Walter Stuart, Solange França, Manoel Vieira, Augusto M.de Campos, Aliomar de Matos & Ballet 'Tio Samba'... as one can see they used the same ballet corps formed for Aloysio de Oliveira's extravaganza 'Tio Sam...ba'.
10 February 1963 - Mary Wynne tells all: Italian actor Rossano Brazzi stayed at the Othon Palace Hotel on Praça do Patriarca on his way south to Jacarezinho, a small city in Parana, where he was to play the male lead in 'Pão de Açucar' aka 'Instant love', with Rhonda Fleming & Odete Lara. Ms Wynne tells the latest news about pianist Freddy Feld too:

Ms Wynne says: Freddy Feld já recebeu seu Sacizinho de Ouro como o melhor pianista três vezes - 1957 - 1958 - 1959 voltou do Rio, onde obteve o auxilio da Embaixada Americana na tentativa de conseguir levar seu trio a Boyne Mountain Lodge em Michigan... nada adiantou devido a tal Musicians' Union... Mas, por outro lado, o Freddy foi convidado para tocar no Top Club do Baron Von Stukkart (Vogue) a ser inaugurado breve...
10 February 1963 - TV Record, Channel 7 presents Friedrich  Durrenmatt's 'Der Besuch der alten Dame' (A visita da velha senhora) with Cacilda Becker, Sergio Cardoso, Fredi Kleeman, & Kleber Machado - directed by Walmor Chagas.
Brazilian PR man Mauricio Kus is greeted warmly by Kirk Douglas in a social function in São Paulo. 
23 February 1963 - Hollywood star Kirk Douglas visits Brasilia and is fascinated with he sees. Brazil was a country on the move in 1963...
3 March 1963 - Ms Wynne tells all about Kirk Douglas, who was visiting Brazil and going to many night-clubs in Brasilia, Rio & Sao Paulo.

3rd March 1963 - Mary Wynne says: Orlando Alvarado, o mestre do Ballet Espanhol do restaurante 'Noites Ibéricas', vai ser homenageado na terça-feira, dia 5, ai mesmo no famoso restaurante luso-espanhol da rua Sebastião Pereira, 184 na Santa Cecília.
22nd March 1963 - Teatro Record presents its II Bossa Nova Festival on a Friday night with Sylvia Telles, Tamba Trio, Os Cariocas, Baden Powell, Carlos Lyra, Alaíde Costa, Ana Lucia & Geraldo Vandré plus the combos of Pedrinho Mattar & Moacyr Peixoto. 
22nd March 1963 - the musical revue produced for 1962's Roquette Pinto Award Gala at Teatro Record was so dazzling and grandiose that the revue-sans-the-Awards kept on being shown at the Rua da Consolação theatre for a few days. The 1963 Revista do Roquette Pinto in particular had a longer run than the former years.  
22nd March 1963 - Mary Wynne tells about the shows produced at Teatro Record... and thanks Maria Eliza from TV Record to have sent her her free-tickets.
26 March 1963 - World famous French transexual Coccinelle strutted her thing on the stage of Teatro Record on Wednesday (27) and Thursday (28) at 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM.  Born in Paris as Jacques Charles Dufresnoy, she took the stage name Coccinelle making her debut as a transgender showgirl in 1953 at Chez Madame Arthur. In 1958 she traveled to Casablanca to undergo a vaginoplasty. Coccinelle became really famous after she appeared in Alessandro Blasetti's 'Europa di notte'.
31st March 1963 - Mary Wynne introduces two new-faces in Sao Paulo's night ligh-life: Luiz Carlos Paraná and Tommy Standen: Neither act had his 'definite name' yet: the first started as Luiz Carlos and then changed to Carlos Paraná... he would change it definetely to Luiz Carlos Paraná a few years later; the second was introduced as Tommy Staden... he would add an N to his surname and be known as Tommy Standen for 8 years until he changed it to Terry Winter and finally got to #1 in the charts with 'Summer holiday'.

7 April 1963 - while Bossa Nova was picking up as a desirable 'product' Jazz with the São Paulo Dixieland Band was trying to do the same its Brazilian relation did: having jam-sessions every Monday night at Teatro Oficina while Bossa Nova had Teatro de Arena the same time-slot. Virtusoso guitarrist and banjo player Dudu, who had played rock'n'roll with The Avalons during 1959 and 1960 was back with his true passion: Dixieland jazz.
14 April 1963 - at Juãozinho Saloon on Rua Augusta, 2203, underground – dancing dinner with rock instrumental band The Jet Blacks; top-entertainer Nelson Gonçalves at Michel, rua Major Sertorio, 106; at TAIB - Teatro Alternativo Israelita Brasileiro - they were showing An-Ski's 'O Dibuk' translated into Portuguese by Jaco Guinsburg; at Teatro Record, comedian Chico Anisio did his one-man-stand-up-comedy act twice daily;
14 April 1963 - Bernard Shaw's 'Caesar and Cleopatra' produced and starred by Cacilda Becker staged at her own Teatro Cacilda Becker on Av. Brigadeiro Luiz Antonio, 917; Italian movie-star Vittorio Gassman & Teatro Popolare Italiano in 'Oreste' and 'Il gioco degli eroi' at Theatro Municipal sponsored by TV Record; Russian ballet Moissoeiv with 115 members. In the movies there was Sarita Montiel with 'Perfidia', originally called 'Piel canela' a Cuban-Mexican co-production made in 1953 at Cine Regina & Cine Barão.
21 April 1963 - at Saloon on rua Augusta, rock band The Jet Blacks reigned supreme... they were the first really serious instrumental rock band and made history... 
21st April 1963 - Teatro Record presents 'III Festival da Bossa Nova' with Tamba Trio plus the combo of  Luiz Cesar, Luiz Chaves & Rubinho - which with the addition of pianist Amilton Godoy in 1964 would become the popular Zimbo Trio; North-American dancer Lennie Dale & Martha Botelho would introduce the Bossa Nova dance - devised not long before at Rio de Janeiro's night-club 'Au Bon Gourmet'.
21st April 1963 - ever-green comedian Dercy Gonçalves is 'Senhora Presidenta' - at Teatro Natal some 40 years before Dilma Rousseff became the first and only (so far) Presidenta of Brazil.
21st April 1963 - Jewish theatre TAIB - Teatro de Arte Israelita Brasileiro is not having 'O Dibuk' tonight - instead they're having a memorial service to honour the Warsaw Ghetto uprising which took place from 19 April to 16 May 1943; An-Ski's 'O Dibuk' translated by Jacó Guinsburg, directed by Graça Mello.
28 April 1963 - Monday night at Teatro Record: 'I Encontro Samba-Jazz' with Dick Farney, Moacyr Peixoto, Casé & Pedrinho Mattar plus Leny Andrade and Dave Gordon. Following the triumph of the previous 3 Bossa Nova nights at Teatro Record, manager Paulo Machado thought it good to go a little further afield and bring what some people called Samba-Jazz to the fore: singer pianist Dick Farney, pianists Moacyr Peixoto and Pedrinho Mattar would fit the bill all right. Leny Andrade whose specialty was scat-singing would be right on top too... plus Dave Gordon, a singer from British Guiana who was married to Denise Duran, sister of late Dolores Duran
28 April 1963 - Teatro Records presents 'Oito mulheres' with Dulcina, Maria Fernanda and 6 other stars... 
28 April 1963 - at Teatro Cacilda Becker, Bernard Shaw's 'Cesar e Cleopatra' with Cacilda herself & Ziembinski...
12 May 1963 - Mexican movies were popular in Brazil in the 50s & 60s. Pel-Mex's 1952's 'El derecho de nacer' (O direito de nascer) with Jorge Mistral was back at Cine Marco Polo; 1957's 'El bolero de Raquel' (O engraxate) was Cantinflas at his best; 20th Century Fox's 1962's 'The longest day' (O mais longo dos dias) which might be dubbed 'The most boring day' was playing at Cine Marrocos; French chansonier Gilbert Becaud was visiting São Paulo, performing at Theatro Paramount and TV Excelsior; comedienne Dercy Gonçalves showed all her roughness-cum-vulgarity in 'Siamo tutti tarados' which in free-translation means 'We are all degenerate'; at Michel night-club Edith Veiga sang nightly.

21st July 1963 - Have a look at all the stars that were shining brightly on Sao Paulo's night life: stating with Alaide Costa, Moacyr Peixoto Trio & Sabá Trio at A Baiuca; Rock'n'roll king Carlos Gonzaga at Black Jack boite; a whole musical revue at Bum-Bum-Bum with Paula do Salgueiro, movie star Marlene França & many others in 'Sambolelé'; at Cambridge Bar on Avenida 9 de Julho, Maricene Costa sings with Pedrinho Mattar Trio; at Fasano on Avenida Paulista, Uccio Gaeta & his combo; at Juão Sebastião Bar, Claudette Soares & Leny Andrade with their different combos; at Juãozinho aka Saloon on Rua Augusta which was a rock'n'roll joint, The Jordans kept on playing their loud rock'n'roll trying to emulate The Jet Blacks; at Michel on Rua Major Sertorio 1950s Os Demonios da Garoa that would have a big come back in late 1964 were still singing their quaint sort of 'Paulista samba'; and finally at Pierrot, Denise Dumont & Geraldo Cunha were doing their (separate) thing.

11 August 1963 - It is almost unbelievable Maurice Chevalier who would turn 75 years old in exactly 4 weeks: Maurice Auguste Chevalier who was born in Paris on 12 September 1888, was still working hard on the stage. It makes one wonder what poor Maurice did with the millions of dollars he earned in Hollywood in the 1920s, 30s, 40s & 50s.
11 August 1963 - Mary Wynne writes: This evening at 6:00 PM there will be a press-conference at Terrazza Martini, at Conjunto Nacional on Avenida Paulista where 'magnifique' Maurice Chevalier will again meet Mr. Freddy who is considered by many as 'the Chevalier who lives in Sao Paulo'. They have met before in France when this photo was taken (the photo unfortunately did not appear - only a black spot in its place). Tomorrow (12 August 1963) Mr Chevalier will perform at Teatro Record at 9:00 PM. 
18 August 1963 - Variety theatre Natal had two different halls: Sala Vermelha (Red Room) presented 'Tem bôas p'ra tudo', a pun on an Alcides Gerardi hit-song called 'Tem bôbo p'ra tudo' - they only exchanged the word 'bôbo' (fool, simpleton) for 'bôa' (broad); popular movie actress & show-girl Sonia Mamede was the revue star; at Sala Azul (Blue Room) show-girl Marly Marley stars in 'Miss Universo é nossa' (Miss Universe is ours) in reference to the fact that Miss Brazil 1963, Yeda Maria Vargas was chosen as Miss Universe in Miami just a month ago. Brazilians followed the Miss Universe pageant with bated breath ever since 1954 when Martha Rocha was the runner-up.

18 August 1963 - actress-singer Bibi Ferreira plays Eliza Doolittle in the Brazilian version of 'My fair lady' translated quaintly as 'Minha querida lady'; Edson França plays professor Henry Higgins... now I don't know how Henrique Pongetti, the translator, went about dealing with the Cockney pronunciation of words...

18 August 1963 - Estadão columnist Mary Wynne congratulates pianist Pedrinho Mattar on his 27th birthday; Mattar was born in Santos-SP on 19 August 1936 and 'Velha Guarda' singer Aracy de Almeida, who turns 49 years old, she was born in Rio de Janeiro-DF on 19 August 1914.

1st December 1963 - only 7 weeks after Nico Fidenco took to the stage of Teatro Record, another Italian singer - Emilio Pericoli presents his repertoire to the Brazilian public. Soon, Italian records would take over the Brazilian charts in what is known as the Italian music invasion. It's no coincidence that the Fidenco & Pericoli - 2 of the initial 'invaders' were the very first to present themselves in person in Brazil: Emilio Pericoli's 'Al di là' was the first Italian record to reach the top of the Brazilian charts in 1963; then Fidenco's 'Legata a un granello di sabbia' also went all the way to Number One in the charts.
8 December 1963 - not only Teatro de Arena & Teatro Oficina had Bossa Nova nights... look at TAIB - Teatro de Arte Israelita Brasileiro with Pery Ribeiro & Manfredo Fest Trio;  at Teatro Aliança Francesa one could go to hear & see the Bossa Nova of Thelma Soares, Walter Santos & Sabá Trio plus baroque music to boot.
8 December 1963 - at Juão Sebastião Bar at rua Major Sertorio, 772: Pery Ribeiro & Conjunto de Manfredo aka Manfredo Fest Trio plus Claudette Soares with the combo of Walter Wanderley.
22nd December 1963 - just 2 days after Christmas Oscarito premieres 'Zero à esquerda' a revue written by Jose Wanderley & Mario Lago with Raquel Martins, Margot Louro (Oscarito's wife), Renato Restier (maybe Brazilian cinema's most famous bad-man alongside Aurelio Texeira) & others. Oscarito had always worked at the theatre even when he was the most popular cinema comedian in the country. Brazilian film industry never paid big salaries like those earned by American stars in Hollywood so even our biggest film-stars had to make personal appearances at theatres to supplement their income. By 1963-1964 Brazilian musical-comedy-films were anything but dead & buried and their former stars were almost forgotten but not gone yet. Oscarito who was born in Malaga, Spain on 16 August 1906, died on 4 August 1970, 12 days short of his 64th birthday.
